Silent Night–one of the most beloved Christmas carols draws our minds and hearts inward as we reflect on the events surrounding our Savior’s birth–including the calmness, peace, and light that He promises. For many during this time of year, the nights really are peaceful, calm and bright. Many are resting well at night  But for many others, the nights are far from silent.  All isn’t bright. All isn’t calm. Everyone isn’t sleeping in heavenly peace. Many are feeling the burden of loneliness, debt/financial trouble, loss, incomplete goals, failures, strained relationships, and anxiety & depression in December.  These categories of individuals aren’t sleeping well at night.  They are up thinking and ruminatingtossing and turningworrying and wondering!  They wouldn’t describe life as calm and bright–chaos and gloomy fits their life circumstances better.  The noise in their head robs them of the promise of a silent night.  If this is you, we want to help you have more peaceful nights full of God’s promise and hope. Try these tips:
  1. Use a Worry Box: Write the top 10 things you are worried about and put them in a box that you keep nearby your bed.  Be intentional on allowing God to deal with these concerns while you sleep.
  2. Kick Comparison to the Curb: Comparison is a major peace-robber and is a major contributor to nights full of insomnia.  If you want more peaceful nights, try to redirect your thoughts when you notice yourself comparing your life to others.
  3. Establish Emotional Boundaries: Many times we lose sleep worrying about others and their problems. We feel what others feel. We take on others’ burdens to a fault. We want to fix everyone and everything. Our compassion and empathy has become dysfunctional.  It’s ok to help and be concerned, but be careful of others’ emotions contaminating your emotions and robbing you of peaceful nights.
  4. Meditate on God’s Promises: Use your first few minutes in the bed to remember God. Psalm 63:6 says, “When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches.”
You can have the promise of a Silent Night where all truly is calm and bright and your sleep is peaceful and heavenly if you add these tools into your nightly routine.
